The Power Of Chanting Mantras In Ramanashram

“There is neither Past nor Future. There is only the Present.”

-Ramana Maharshi

In this world there are some places that are surrounded by magic, you can feel it from the very first moment you put a step inside of them. The Ashram of Ramana Maharshi is without doubts one of this enchanted locations where the atmosphere of peace and wisdom fascinates and covers you, making you feel like you are coming home again after a very long time.

This treasure is hidden in  Tiruvannamalai, South India, and I would love to share with you how coming every day to this spot changed my life and helped me to understand what universe was teaching me at that moment in my life.

It was Thursday afternoon, and the sun was saying goodbye behind the Holy Mountain Arunachala when Bharati guided me and my colleague through the stairs of the Ashram. I remember to feel half excited half worried, because my spiritual path started long time ago with Ramana Maharshi, and I was afraid of having too high expectations about how his ashram should look like or how it should make me feel.

We entered in a big a white room that was perfectly decorated with pictures of Ramana Maharshi, flowers and a big Shiva Lingam in the middle. I saw that men and women were sitting in different sides of the chamber. It didn’t surprise me at all, because I read is typical in Indian Ashrams. Then, when I was ready for crossing the place in order to start walking Pradakshina around the Shiva Lingam, It happened. The men turned towards the women and the women turned towards the men, and they started to chant.

I have never listened to something as incredible as it was. It seemed like a conversation between them, an exchange of feminine and masculine voices and energies which intention was not the beauty of the song, but to create something that connects our reality with the divine force that is within us. And it worked. Something started to grow in the atmosphere, something like grace and magic. Something that was as pure and mystic as you can’t describe with words.

I continued walking, feeling that a force was guiding me, only focused in perceiving that sacred moment, the “Now” that was surrounding every being who was willing to allow it to blossom. It was a gift of destiny, the highest gift that you can receive. The gift of understanding that the present time is the only place where you can truly be.

After this first impression, coming to Ramanashram at chanting time was my favourite part of the day. Some days I woke up when the sun rose to listen to morning Mantras as well. I discovered when I started my day with this routine, I was totally focused and It was more likely to being in balance and happy till night time.

It is a fact: Sound is vibration. Sound is power. When we chant Mantras in Sanskrit, we are sending powerful vibrations to the universe, and every action has a reaction, as we already know. Moreover, if you put all your attention in trying to do it well, you can enter in a very deep kind of meditation state that will allow you to achieve higher states of consciousness.

Day to day life in Tiruvannamalai

For this reason, I continue my Mantra chanting. I used to go alone or with my colleague, but my favourite moments were when we went all together (The whole Glanert family, my coworker and me). I had the opportunity to walk Pradakshina during the chanting with Gabriel in my arms. In those situations I had powerful insights about understanding the Non-Duality, feeling that the life that was inside of him has the same roots that mine. They were super intense and mystical experiences.

Sometimes we need to find inspiration far from home, in order to get enough energy to change our closest environment. Sometimes inspiration is just waiting for us in the smallest situation that we can find in our day to day life. But what is true is that, no matter where you are, if you keep your eyes and your heart open to receive whatever the Divine Force wants to share with you.

So nowadays I’m totally sure that discovering this Mantra Chanting was an invitation of the Gods, an invitation to live. To understand that we are all one, that we can create the type of life that we want to live, if we decided to stay on the present moment instead of being jumping to future or to past any time that we feel the necessity.

Chanting mantras for healing the soul, for growing, for tuning to the universal frequency of life… Chanting for celebrating or for mourning. It doesn’t matter the reason, just chant and you will see how life flourishes with every step you take.

BEING A WORKAWAY IN INDIA

An experience from Claudia Valdeón….

I still remember the face of my mum when I told her: “Mum, I’m going to India”, is impossible to forget the way she stared at me and said, “You are crazy if you think I’m going to allow you to go alone to that country.” And I replayed, “But mum, I’m not going alone.” And I smiled at her. Here is where my adventure began, or maybe we can go back a little bit more…

I was traveling through Europe using Workaway when I luckily landed in Bharati’s Ashram, in Sasbachwalden, after a really bad experience in another place. For me it was like a dream, amazing people, high quality food, my work was appreciated… And I established a deep connexion with Bharati, but especially with her little son, Gabriel Shiva.

I was hearing India’s call in my heart for a long time, but as a woman travelling alone, I didn’t know what to think about it, because people love to speak too much about this controversial territory, sometimes good, sometimes bad, and I was feeling not secure enough to make the big step.

So I was delighted of being close to Bharati to ask her all my India’s questions. She was more than an expert after living there many years, she really knew all the faces that India has. After more than one interrogation, she tough me the first lesson I needed to learn. “India is like a mirror, whatever you have inside, it will give you back.”

One of my last days in Sasbachwalden, Bharati asked me for a private talk. When we sit down on her place, she started, “I want to offer you something, but of course you can answer whatever you feel.” In this moment I was afraid, but she continued, “Do you want to come to India with us?”. First I tried to find the words inside my throat, but I couldn’t, and then I just said, “Yes, YES, YES, YEEEEEEEES.” We laughed together, and we spoke more about details.

After this powerful notice, the rest of the days in the Ashram went fast. When December arrived, I packed my stuff, I said Continue reading
